7 Essential Things to Remember on Your First Camping Trip

TOG December 11, 2017 0 comments

Camping is going to be, hands down, one of the most enriching experiences of your life. There is something magical about sleeping in the wild in the company of trees and a blanket of stars above while being protected by your trusty tent. Besides all the great memories you're going to make with your friends, there is a certain peace that you feel in the wild which you cannot let go of for a long time. Talk to anybody who goes camping regularly and they will tell you that it's a lot like therapy.

Once you get a taste of it, you feel the need to get out in the great outdoors every once in a while. If you've never camped before, you are in luck. Your first camping trip is going to change your life and show you another side of the world. You're going to see a part of the world that is away from the rush and commotion that entails city life. It is going to be an experience that makes you leave your stress and worries behind in the city. This does not exactly mean that camping is easy or effortless. There is some amount of effort and care that is required to pull it off. It is also possible that if you overlook some important details, your entire trip can get derailed and turn into a disaster.

Here are seven important points to keep in mind to make the most of your first camping experience.

Make a List of Essentials

Failing to plan is planning to fail. One of the most important stages of camping is planning before the experience itself. When you're going into the wild, you're only going to have the things that you carry. You have to carry every valuable essential with you. If you miss bringing your lighter, you are not going to have a fire. If you forget the tent pegs, your tent will not stay down. If you don't carry a flashlight, you cannot see anything at night especially if the moon is in its waning stages. The best way to avoid forgetting important things for the camp is to make a list of essentials that you think you'll absolutely need. Don't forget to double-check and triple-check this list to make sure your planning is efficient.

Reach Your Camp Before Sunset

Whether you're hiking to a spot or you're driving to a campground, it is of paramount importance that you reach your camp before sunset. Once it's dark, the situation is going to turn extremely testing. It will be a lot easier for you to find a great spot during daylight. You have to make sure that the spot you choose is safe, flat, and easy to stick your tent pegs into. After sundown, this whole process is going to be very challenging which is, honestly, not worth it at all. Plan your trip in a way that you have enough time with daylight to make things a lot easier for you.

Build a Fire Away from the Tent

One of the easiest ways the trip can go downhill is if even one splinter from the campfire touches your shelter for the night, your tent. Be mindful of the fact that even tents that claim to be fire-retardant are not worth the risk. Think about it; if your tent lights up on fire, you'll have no shelter for the night in the woods and also risk burning up all your stuff with it. Being exposed to the elements without any backup will give you one of the worst experiences of your life. Build a fire at least 15 feet away from your tent and you'll have one of the most memorable nights of your life. Also, remember to douse the remaining charcoals in the fire before you retire for the night. A lot of times wind can reignite the fire which is again risky when left alone.

Find Solid Ground for Camp

At home, you've never had to think twice before you go to sleep. In the wild though, it's quite a different story. Location scouting for the camp will make or break your night. First, you have to find a spot that is completely flat. Even a few bumps here and there can disturb your sleep and you'll spend your night being cranky. Moreover, many flat spaces tend to have some plants growing out. So depending on how big they are, you may or may not have to uproot them to make sure your tent floor is flat. The ground you choose also cannot be rocky or hard so that you can dig your tent pegs in easily. Without being firmly held into the ground, the pegs may prove useless and make your tent can become susceptible to the wind. All you have to remember is that the kind of spot you choose will decide if you're going to have a good night's sleep or not.

Always Keep the Tent Zip Closed

You're not going to be spending all your time just in the tent or by the campfire. You'll be going in and out until the time that you settle down for the night and fall asleep. During this time, when you enter and exit the tent, always remember to keep the tent door closed. Being in the woods, you do not want a wild unwelcome guest waiting for you when you retire for the night. It may sound like a fairly small thing but keeping the tent zip closed will save your life. By zipping it up, you secure your tent and keep out intruders like snakes, scorpions, mice, mosquitoes, bugs, and many other critters. This one pointer saves lives and is easy to follow.

Always Carry Warm Clothes

Warm clothes will be your best friends. We are totally accustomed to the solid brick walls of our homes which significantly keep the house warmer than the outside. In a tent though, it's a different matter. The walls are thin and they cannot protect you from the wind or cold. Weather can also change at any point in time. You always want to be prepared with warm clothes even if you have a sleeping bag in order to have as many layers as possible on you and keep all the warmth in.

Leave the Campsite Just as You Found It

You need to respect the wilderness and leave no trace of your campsite when you start for home. Throwing trash and polluting the area in the woods can have devastating effects on the environment and the animals in the vicinity. Basically, you have to make sure that the spot looks exactly as you found it before pitching your tent. This way, you preserve nature and don't condemn it to the pollution that we are used to in the cities. This keeps the wilderness sacred and attractive to more happy campers in the future. Think about it this way, when you hike up to a campsite after struggling and dreaming about it for quite some time, would you like to see an empty water bottle and a couple of plastic bags that somebody else left behind?

Follow these rules and you will get the most rewarding experience that you won't be forgetting anytime soon. Oh and not to forget a bonus rule which experienced campers will always say to you. You lazy, you die!
